Italian Sausage with Peppers and Onions
A classic, hearty dish featuring juicy Italian sausages cooked with sweet peppers and caramelized onions. Itβs flavorful, comforting, and perfect served on its own or in a sandwich roll.
Ingredients
4 Italian sausages (mild or spicy)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, sliced
2 bell peppers (any color), sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Β½ teaspoon salt
Β½ teaspoon black pepper
Β½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Β½ cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
ΒΌ cup water or chicken broth
Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)
4 hoagie or sandwich rolls (optional, for serving)
Instructions
Brown the Sausages
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the sausages and cook for 5β7 minutes, turning occasionally until browned on all sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook for 5β6 minutes until softened.
Add Garlic and Seasoning
Stir in the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Simmer with Sauce
Pour in the tomato sauce and water (or broth). Stir well.
Finish Cooking the Sausages
Return the sausages to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10β15 minutes, until sausages are fully cooked and flavors blend together.
Serve
Garnish with fresh parsley or basil if desired. Serve the sausages with the peppers and onions on a plate or inside toasted sandwich rolls.
