White Bread (Quick Recipe)
This is a fast, reliable homemade white bread that turns out soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches or toast. No long rising times and no special equipment needed.
Ingredients
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
- ¼ cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Instructions
1. Activate yeast
In a large bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until slightly foamy.
2. Mix dough
Add melted butter, egg, and salt. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead
Knead on a lightly floured surface for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. First rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 30–40 minutes until doubled.
5. Shape
Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
6. Second rise
Cover and let rise 15–20 minutes, until dough rises just above the pan.
7. Bake
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
8. Cool
Remove from pan and cool on a rack before slicing.
Tips
- For extra softness, brush the top with melted butter after baking
- Do not over-flour; the dough should be soft
- Use instant yeast for the quickest results
